How to Find Your Google Tag Manager Container ID (2026)

Reading time: ~4 minutes ยท Or watch the 2-minute video below

Your Google Tag Manager container ID is a small string of characters that looks like GTM-ABCD123. It's what identifies your GTM container to every tool that needs to connect to it โ€” Segment, Shopify, WordPress plugins, third-party analytics platforms, developer scripts, and more.

The good news: it's genuinely easy to find. There are four places you can grab it from, depending on where you're working. This guide covers all four, plus what to do if you can't find it or aren't sure whether GTM is installed on your site yet.

What we'll cover

  • What a GTM container ID is and what it looks like
  • Method 1: Grab it from the GTM interface (fastest)
  • Method 2: Find it in the Admin section
  • Method 3: See it in the accounts list
  • Method 4: Find it in your website's source code
  • Common questions and troubleshooting

What is a Google Tag Manager container ID?

A container ID is a unique identifier assigned to each GTM container when you create it. Every container has its own ID, and it always follows the same format: GTM- followed by 7 alphanumeric characters, like GTM-ABCD123 or GTM-P8QW9XZ.

You'll need this ID whenever you want to:

  • Install GTM on your website (via a WordPress plugin, Shopify, Webflow, or manually)
  • Connect GTM to third-party tools like Segment or RudderStack
  • Share access to your container with a developer or agency
  • Verify which container is active on a site
  • Enable Google Tag Gateway (which we cover in our Google Tag Gateway setup guide)

Now let's find yours.

Method 1: From the GTM interface (fastest)

This is the quickest way. Takes about 5 seconds if you're already signed in.

  1. Go to tagmanager.google.com
  2. Sign in with the Google account that owns your GTM container
  3. Click on the container name from your accounts list
  4. Look at the top-right corner of the screen, right next to the Submit and Preview buttons

You'll see your container ID displayed there in the format GTM-XXXXXXX. Click on it to copy, or just read it off the screen.

๐Ÿ’ก Quick tip: If you manage multiple containers, the ID at the top-right always corresponds to the container you currently have open. Switching containers from the dropdown will change the visible ID.

Method 2: From the Admin section

This method also shows you the full container installation code, which is handy if you're setting up GTM on a new site.

  1. Inside your container, click Admin at the top
  2. In the middle column (Container), click Install Google Tag Manager
  3. A popup will open displaying two code snippets โ€” one for the <head> and one for the <body>
  4. Your container ID appears at the top of the popup and is also embedded in both code snippets (search for GTM-)

This is the same code you'd give to a developer to install GTM manually on a website.

Method 3: From the accounts list

Useful when you manage several containers and want to compare IDs without opening each one individually.

  1. Go to tagmanager.google.com
  2. You'll land on the accounts page showing all your accounts and containers
  3. Each container listed shows its ID right next to the container name

Handy for agencies or in-house teams juggling multiple GTM setups across different brands or environments.

Not sure if GTM is set up properly on your site?

Finding the container ID is the easy part. Making sure GTM is installed correctly, firing the right tags, and passing data cleanly to Google Ads and GA4 is where most small businesses get stuck. We set this up for small businesses every week.

Method 4: From your website's source code

If GTM is already installed on a website โ€” yours or someone else's โ€” you can find the container ID by inspecting the page source. Useful when you've inherited a site and don't know which GTM container is running.

  1. Open the website in your browser
  2. Right-click anywhere on the page and select View Page Source (or press Ctrl+U on Windows / Cmd+Option+U on Mac)
  3. Press Ctrl+F (Windows) or Cmd+F (Mac) to open the search bar
  4. Search for GTM-

You'll find the container ID inside the GTM script tag, usually near the top of the <head> section. It'll look something like:

https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtm.js?id=GTM-ABCD123

The part after id= is your container ID.

โš ๏ธ Watch out: A page can have multiple GTM containers installed (for example, one from your CMS plugin and another manually added). If you find more than one GTM- reference in the source, that's why. Use the Tag Assistant Chrome extension to see all active containers cleanly.

Common questions

My container ID starts with GT- instead of GTM-. Is that different?

Yes. IDs starting with GT- are for the newer Google Tag (a simplified alternative to GTM introduced in 2022). IDs starting with GTM- are for traditional Google Tag Manager containers. Both are valid, they just power different setups.

I have a container ID starting with GTM-XXXX (only 4 characters). Is that valid?

Older containers created before 2020 sometimes have shorter IDs. They still work. Newer containers use the standard 7-character format.

Can I change my container ID?

No. Container IDs are permanent and assigned by Google when the container is created. If you need a different ID, you'd need to create a new container and reinstall it on your site (which means re-adding all your tags, triggers, and variables โ€” not fun).

Where do I find the ID if I only have access to a workspace, not the container?

Even inside a workspace, the container ID is visible in the top-right corner (Method 1) and in the Admin section (Method 2). You don't need container-level admin permissions to see the ID โ€” just container access.

What if I'm not sure whether GTM is installed on my website at all?

Install the Tag Assistant Companion Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store. Visit your website with the extension enabled โ€” it will tell you exactly which GTM containers are firing (if any) and show their IDs.

Final thoughts

Finding your GTM container ID takes about 5 seconds once you know where to look. The tricky part isn't the ID itself โ€” it's what comes after: making sure GTM is actually installed correctly, that your tags are firing on the right events, and that data is flowing cleanly into Google Ads and GA4.

If you're at the "just installed GTM, now what?" stage, our Google Ads Conversion Tracking with GTM & GA4 guide is the natural next step. It walks through building your first conversion tag from scratch.

And if GTM feels overwhelming โ€” you're not alone. Most small business owners never touch it because it looks technical. It genuinely isn't, once someone shows you the ropes.
